Objective

Fly your fighter craft over the enemy fortress, destroying radar dishes, fuel tanks, and robots while dodging walls, force fields, and enemy fire. Refuel by shooting fuel tanks, then face down the giant robot boss at the end of the fortress.

Pioneering Isometric 3D

Zaxxon's axonometric perspective, combined with an on-screen altimeter tracking the player's altitude, created a genuine sense of three-dimensional flight years before true 3D graphics were possible in arcades.

Fun Facts

  • Zaxxon was one of the first video games to use isometric ("axonometric") projection to simulate 3D space.
  • The altimeter gauge tracking the player's height was an innovative HUD element for its time.
  • The final boss, a giant robot dragon, shares its name with the game itself.
  • Zaxxon was ported to numerous home systems and became one of Sega's early arcade hits.

Why Did It Become Legendary?

Zaxxon proved that arcade games could simulate genuine three-dimensional space long before real 3D hardware existed. Its innovative perspective and altitude mechanic influenced countless later isometric games and remains a landmark in the evolution of the shooter genre.
